Flipped Learning

What's in a name?

Flipped Learning - also known as Flipping the Classroom - is an innovative teaching method where students’ active learning is at the centre. This pedagogical model aims to use the available class time as efficiently as possible for active and deep learning. In Flipped Learning, the first introduction to new material does not take place in the classroom but in the student’s individual space. Before class, students watch a short video or read a text explaining the new subject matter. In the classroom - the group space - students work on the subject matter and deepen their understanding in an (inter)active way. The teacher doesn’t take on the role of the sage on the stage, but he can fully engage as the guide on the side who is present in the classroom to help students with their problems.
The innovative added value of Flipped Learning is that this pedagogical model focuses on using available face-to-face time in class in an increasingly efficient way in order to work on the hard stuff in the group space. Flipped Learning can be a catalyst for more development-focused and learner-centred education. It can facilitate deep level and profound learning in the group space in which the teacher - as a coach - challenges his students to higher-order thinking activities.
